Making the most of limited square footage is essential for…
If your New Year’s resolution is to redecorate and rejuvenate your home then the likelihood is you are thinking about how to design and re-style your house to suit your tastes. The simplest thing to do would be to mimic a design that you like, for example the minimalistic look or the shabby chic effect, which may look lovely, but also may look similar to the homes of your friends or family. If you don’t want to feel like you are living in someone else’s house try to make your decor different and new in design and style by using our 2016 home décor predictions as a guideline.
It is impossible to say for sure what is going to be in style this year, but from the current trends here are some of our home décor predictions for 2016:
Black stainless steel: more companies are now making appliances such as cookers and fridge-freezers, with a black stainless steel finish instead of the lighter typical steel and it is becoming very popular. If you’re looking for the perfect way to re-design your kitchen, this is perfect.
Pedestals: 2016 is likely to be a year of quirky looking pedestals. These will look more like sculptures or pieces of art rather than a boring table, they make a perfect addition to any free corner of your home and are perfect for holding something small like a house plant or the house phone.
Two-tone kitchen cabinets: the new style for kitchens this year is likely to be two-tone cabinets, with lower cabinets being darker in colour, upper cabinets a neutral or white colour and all work surfaces being a lighter shade. This will allow you to play with mixing styles and gives your kitchen dimension.
Fireplaces: set to be a more romantic year, the fireplace is making a comeback! Though this is a beautiful addition to your home there are some things you need to consider before getting a fireplace. For example, what is the size of your home? If it is too small you’ll need to use your fire on a low heat which will accumulate soot. Do you have ventilation that will allow air to be pulled through the fireplace? If your home is sealed the fireplace may not function properly. What is your insulation like? This will determine the kind of fireplace and how much heating you will need. Can your floor handle the additional weight of a fireplace? Some fireplaces can be very heavy.
Combination toilets and bidets: separate bidets never really took off, however, manufacturers have been developing a combination toilet-bidet that is set to take the bathroom design world by storm.
Bedroom desk: we are moving away from sitting at the sofa with a laptop on your legs and returning to the age of the desk. High-gloss, strong desks are likely to be very popular in 2016.
Formal dining: in modern homes the table and chairs, if there is one, can be found in any of the downstairs rooms, with dining rooms being mixed into kitchens or even living rooms. This year the dining room is making a come-back, so if you have a second living room, a home office, or a play room downstairs, why not consider turning it into a dining room.
The sun corner: sun rooms are quite popular and are a lovely addition to your home, but they are also quite expensive. A cheaper alternative would be turn a corner of your home that gets the most light, into a small lounging area where you can soak up some rays.
