It's something not often considered, but decorating a ceiling can…
There are all sorts of ways to refresh a room that is looking a bit old and sad, and you don’t need to spend a lot of money or time on the job to make a room look a bit nicer. Below are some hints and tips on how to refresh a room without spending a lot.
- Spruce up your windows
Curtains effortlessly frame windows with colour and appeal. Check your curtains to make sure that they are right for your windows and for the room in general. Curtains that are the wrong length or colour can really affect a room. While you’re at it you may also focus on some window cleaning to keep them nice and shiny.
- Add plants and flowers
Plants and flowers can really add character to a room. They can supply colour and charm, and some can even reflect light and make a room feel brighter. Plus your room will feel airy and could even smell nicer!
- Try out some rugs
Rugs can really change the mood of a room, so it’s best to invest in more than one. Thick rugs with dark, rich colours and Persian motifs look great in winter, whilst in summer go for light coloured cotton rugs to make the room feel fresh and cool. Keeping the carpets clean will be a fairly easy task if you focus on regular vacuuming, but you should make sure you hire a carpet cleaning company if you can’t handle the tougher spots.
- Change the frames on artwork
A lot of artwork and photographs can seem more boring than they are because of the frames that they are in. The right frame can really bring artwork to life and brighten up your room considerably. Darker wood frames really work for larger models, whilst smaller artworks pop out from lighter wood frames. Go for metallic or coloured frames if you’re opting for a modern, minimalist look.
- Smarten up your kitchen
A great way to refresh kitchen cupboards is to change the front or the design of them. Gold, brass or dark wood evoke the idea of tradition and warmth, whilst metallic designs and pale cupboards give the viewer an idea of a modern look. Make sure you setup your kitchen in such a way that you will have no trouble keeping your house clean.
- Spruce up your stairway
Barren hallways can often be brightened up with artwork or new carpet. Painted railings and new lighting can be added to make the hall seem more welcoming and inviting.
- Make your home colourful
Make your home more colourful! Even if you only colour one wall in a room, that can really add something to it. Accessories can help to brighten the room. You don’t need to use an unusual or bright tone – you can add darker colours such as greys and greens and it will still make a room more welcoming and more modern.
- Examine your lighting
Lighting can really affect the mood of a room – too dark and everything can seem grimy and old, too bright and suddenly you can see the flaws in everything, and a lot of dust! Simply changing a lampshade can add so much to a room, and its cheap and easy to do! Halogen fixtures in kitchens and bathrooms can add light without getting in the way or distracting the viewer from other features in the room.
- Make a feature out of your valuables
Instead of spreading your valuable items around the house, group them together and make a feature out of them. Shelves fill up empty space and can make a room more attractive.
- Theme your room
From Victorian to the modern age, Africa to Asia, themed rooms can be easy and fun to make. Simple lamps, cushions and accessories can add to the theme you want easily. You don’t have to spend a lot to make a great impact on your room.
